We understand the ongoing evolving situation regarding the spread of COVID-19, and hence the hesitation to apply to the UWC Kenya Short Course. We encourage all interested applicants to continue and submit their applications as normal as per previously advertised deadlines. We will then continue to evaluate the situation to determine the next course of action with accepted applicants. We would also like to reiterate that the safety of our facilitators and participants remains paramount.

Eligibility

  • Aged 16-19 for the entirety of the short course
  • Have a conversational level of English
  • Have not been accepted to a UWC school or college
  • Open-minded and eager to learn
  • Resonate with the course's theme of deconstructing narratives

General Information

  • The UWC Kenya Short Course: DeConstructing Narratives 2020 will take place from August 2nd to 17th 2020 in Nairobi, Kenya
  • The participation fee for the the course is KES 75,000 or USD 750 which includes room & board, on the ground transportation in Nairobi, course activities, and other direct course related expense
  • There is financial aid (partial and full scholarships) available to those accepted participants with demonstrated need. To apply for financial aid you will need to indicate this in your application AND submit the financial assessment form before the March 31st deadline
  • Financial aid is only available to finance the participation fee. There are travel subsidies for participants with the highest demonstrated need.
  • Financial aid concerns will be discussed after an initial application is successful

Selection Criteria

Intellectual curiosity and motivation

A genuine urge to learn about the world around oneself and the ability to recognise the details and grasp the breadth of issues (for example global and local concerns) involved in any given topic and to analyse them thoroughly.

Active commitment

The ability to develop and readiness to reflect, question and confront one’s own values, to measure one’s behaviour within family and community against one’s values, and to act on one’s own beliefs accordingly and responsibly.

Social competence

The ability and readiness to make contact with other people, to interact respectfully with them, to work together with them in a team and to achieve solutions; the ability to express oneself adequately in different situations and to different people.

Resilience, personal responsibility and integrity

The ability to look after oneself physically and emotionally during the challenging and transforming experience that a UWC short course offers; the personal motivation to adhere to UWC’s common moral and ethical principles, a sense of humility and an ability to listen and value another person’s opinion and experience.

A note about the selection process

The selection process is designed to support the selection committee to understand how each applicant demonstrates promise and potential as much as proven merit in the core criteria below. You do not need to have accessed a lot of opportunities. We will consider each applicant in the context of their access to opportunities. We look forward to reading your application.
